How Long Does FDA Detention Testing Take?
A realistic look at the timeline from sampling to a submittable result — the stages, the analyte-driven differences, and why the number of products and FDA's own review both affect how fast your shipment can clear.
The Short Version
How Long Does It Actually Take?
It depends mostly on the analyte, the number of products, and FDA's review — not on any single fixed number. Once samples reach the lab, some chemistry tests (like pesticides) can run in a couple of days on a rush basis, while microbiological tests (like Salmonella) need around five days minimum because biological incubation can't be sped up. Then a defensible data package has to be prepared and submitted, and FDA has to review it. Add sampling scheduling at the front and FDA review at the back, and a straightforward case often runs one to a few weeks end to end — longer if many products are involved.

The Stages That Make Up the Timeline
"Testing time" is really several stages back to back. Each adds time, and only some can be rushed:

Scheduling & Sampling
A sampler has to be arranged and sent to where the goods are held to collect representative samples under documented custody. How quickly depends on the site, location, and access — arranging this early saves days.

Laboratory Analysis
The clock here is set by the analyte. On a rush basis, pesticide or filth analysis can run in roughly 48–72 hours; microbiological analysis such as Salmonella typically needs about five days because incubation can't be shortened.

Data Package Preparation
FDA expects a comprehensive analytical package — often lengthy — with methods, raw data, and QC. Preparing it commonly adds several days (roughly four for chemistry, four to eight for microbiology).

Submission & FDA Review
The package is submitted to FDA (typically through its electronic system) and the compliance officer reviews it. FDA's review time varies and is outside anyone's direct control — it's the stage people most often forget to budget for.

What Makes It Faster or Slower
- The Analyte
- Chemistry (pesticides, residues, metals) is often faster; microbiology is bounded by incubation time that can't be rushed.
- Number of Products
- FDA generally requires each entry line item to be sampled and analyzed separately — more distinct products means more parallel testing and a bigger package.
- Rush vs. Standard
- Many labs offer rush turnaround at a premium; whether it helps depends on the analyte's fixed biological limits.
- Sampling Logistics
- Where the goods sit, site access, and how fast a sampler can get there all affect the front of the timeline.
- Package Quality
- A complete, well-documented package the first time avoids FDA rejections and re-work that can restart parts of the clock.
- FDA Review Load
- The agency's own review pace varies and isn't something any lab or consultant controls.

Set expectations honestly
- No universal number. Any "X days" quoted without knowing your analyte, product count, and location is a guess. Treat published turnaround figures as lab-analysis time only, not the whole journey.
- Incubation is a hard floor. Microbiological methods have minimum times set by biology; no amount of rush fees compresses them.
- FDA review is the wildcard. Even a perfect, fast package waits on FDA's queue — budget for it.
- Rework is the silent delay. A rejected package can cost more time than the original testing; getting it right the first time is often faster than "fast."
